When consumers think of having tile, stone, marble, or any Cementitious based product installed they usually just think about the final visual aspects of the installation. How it will look in a shower, on a bathroom floor, or against your new countertops. Every product has a rating whether it can be installed on a floor, on a wall, in a commercial application, residential application, high traffic and low traffic areas, slip resistance, inside or outside use. This is very important to ensure that you are installing the correct tile in the proper area. These areas also require a specific thin-set product (this is the concrete based product that holds your tile to its substrate) to ensure proper adhesion for the climate and elements on the installation. There are various manufacturers and types of thin-set available today for just about every application. The last thing you want to do is spend $3 - $20 per square foot for a product and have it fail because the installer chose to use the wrong product because it was cheaper.
Your Sub-floor also plays a very important role in how long your floor will last. Most manufacturers require at least an 1-1/4” substrate underneath their product to provide any warranty. This means most homes that have a 3/4" plywood or OSB subfloor can obtain that additional 1/2" with a tile backer board. Some older homes have a subfloor that is 5/8” thick and requires additional sub-floor sheathing for additional strength prior to installing the 1/2" cement board. There are two thicknesses of cement board available, 1/4" & 1/2". All cement board should be installed with thin-set mortar and fastened with rust resistant screws or nails. Screws are not required by manufacturers but it is the best installation practice.
